Ruth Lang: The Architecture of Creative Reuse

Workshop

Thursday, July 4, 2024

5:00 pm

During this session Ruth Lang will speak about her research and practice, and will respond to selected PhD projects at the School of Architecture, RCA. Ruth is an architect, researcher, writer, Design Council Expert and curator, who runs the Radical Practice module in the School of Architecture. Her research focuses upon the networks and mechanisms of architectural practice, considering how we might practice differently in order to achieve a more equitable profession. Her PhD explored the symbiotic tension between bureaucracy and creativity via the lens of the Architect’s Department of the London County Council from 1943-65. Her work has formed the basis of exhibitions for the Jerwood Gallery, the V&A, and the Design Museum. She wrote ‘Building for Change’ (pub. gestalten, 2022) which demonstrates the ecosystems of construction required for delivering creative reuse strategies in architectural schemes at the scale of the material, the building, the site, and in designing for future deconstruction.
