Sonic Architectures Workshop 2/2

Workshop

Friday, March 21, 2025

10:00 am

Part 1 – the Thursday workshop will be an all–day (10:00-16:00) working session in the RCA Sound Studio in the Stevens Building, Kensington, with Jan ST Werner, Gascia Ouzounian, and Joe Hirst. This studio–based workshop will involve the sonic processing, manipulation, and mixing of audio files. The intention is to use the recordings from workshop #1 as the basis for sonic experimentation and playback during the second part of the workshop. For those of you who weren’t at workshop #1, we recorded the architectures of Worlds End Estate in Chelsea. The estate is a fascinating work of Brutalist architecture, designed by the architect J. Cadbury–Brown, who also designed the RCA building.
Part 2 – the Friday workshop will be an all–day (10:00-16:00) live compositional event in the RCA Technical Studio Space in Battersea. This space allows for multi–channel audio playback and we will activate the sound recordings using moveable speaker configurations, live collective mixing (where participants control individual channels via mobile interfaces), and the distortions of the room and our presence as participants. In the morning, M’Safa and his Media Studies II group will lead in these manipulations, with the afternoon session further testing the compositional possibilities of this multi–channel creation of sonic space.
The second Sonic Architectures workshop on Thursday 20 March and Friday 21 March 2025 is split into two parts. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in as much, or as little, as your schedules allow.

Please contact Mark Campbell, Mohamad Safa or Ines Weizman if you wish to attend.
